Abstract

The study investigated the influence of mobile technology on academic performance among students in Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze, Anambra State. The purpose of the study was to ascertain the relationship between mobile phone usage and academic performance, and to identify the challenges affecting the mobile phone usage among students. Survey design was adopted and questionnaire was employed to elicit data from respondents. The population of the study comprised NCE year I to year III students in Federal College of Education (Technical) Umunze, Anambra State. The total population is 649 from which a sample size of 247 was determined using Taro Yamane formula.

Two research questions and one hypothesis were formulated for the study. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, while correlation analysis was used to test the hypothesis. The findings revealed that the strength of relationship between mobile phone usage and academic performance among students in Federal College of Education (Technical) Umunze Anambra State was high. The findings also revealed that unstable network connectivity, high data cost, unreliable power and battery related issues were the challenges affecting mobile phone usage among students in Federal College of Education (Technical) Umunze Anambra State.

It was then recommended among others that Government and Management of Colleges of Education should provide internet services and constant power to schools in order to improve the usage of mobile phones for academic purposes.
